National Certificate (Vocational)
It is a specialised National Certificate for a chosen career.
This qualification is designed to provide both the theory and practice of the chosen career and is geared towards alleviating the skills shortage in the country.
Entry Requirements
- A year-
end school report for Gr 11 or Gr 12 certificate ; or - A NQF Level 1 qualification ; or
- An approved bridging program designed for the specific purpose to access NQF Level 2 ; or
- A Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment to meet the basic requirements for access to NQF Level 2
Pass Requirements
Vocational subjects
50% per subject
Fundamental subjects
- 40% for Life Skills
- 40% for Computer Literacy
- 40% for English 1st Additional Language
- 30% for Mathematics
Certificates
In order to obtain a National Certificate (Vocational), a student is required to take a total of 7 subjects.
These include 3 fundamental subjects and 4 vocational subjects.
Certificates are issued by the National Department Higher Education and Training in Pretoria, after completion of each level.
Report 191
Learners who have completed a Grade 12 Certificate with a minimum of a higher Certificate achievement can consider studying further at a TVET College for a National Diploma.
The Report 191 (Nated) N4 – N6 Programmes, also known as Alternative Post-school Programmes.
Entry Requirements
- NCOR (Bridging) – Gr. 9 / ABET Level 3
- N1 – N3 – Gr 12 / Depending on subject and symbols.
- N4 – N3 / Level 4
- N5 – N4
- N6 – N5

Certificates & Diplomas
Certificates
Full-time: Four subjects are offered daily for approximately 10 weeks.
Part-time: Two subjects are offered twice weekly for approximately 10 weeks.
After 10 weeks a National Examination is written (April, August and November).
Students who pass all subjects will be issued with a National Certificate in the specific field of study.
Certificates are issued by the National Department Higher Education and Training in Pretoria, after completion of each level.
Diplomas
After completing N6 and 2 years relevant practical experience, students qualify for a National N-Diploma.
12 Subjects are required on N4, N5 and N6 levels. At least 2 N6 subjects must have relevance to the vocation of the candidate.
National N Diplomas are approved and issued by the National Department of Higher Education and Training in Pretoria.
