The National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) qualification comprises an internal on-site process (ICASS & ISAT), as well as a national external written examination, set by the Directorate: Examinations and Assessment of the DHET. The external examination is written during October/November of each year, follow up with a supplementary examination in February of the next year.
ICASS for Vocational/ Fundamental subjects is done in the form of two/ three tests, two/ three tasks and internal examinations (CAT) which covers the whole syllabus.
ISAT (Integrated Summative Assessment Tasks) is done in two phases, either throughout the year or within stipulated hours in a day as prescribed in the SAGs (Subject & Assessment Guidelines). The ISAT mark is valid for a period of three years to complete a qualification. The ICASS mark is valid up to the first supplementary examination immediately following the November examinations.
A student who failed has to redo all the ICASS tasks for that subject. For students to be resulted, the following requirements are compulsory: All THREE components (ICASS, ISAT and Examination) for vocational subjects, BOTH components (ICASS and Examination) for fundamental subjects and subjects with two (2) examination papers, both papers should be written.
