For all programmes proficiency in English is a pre-requisite (reading, writing and speaking).
Business Studies students must prove competence in Mathematical Literacy (refer to latest year-end report as indicator hereof – at least 40%).
Engineering Studies students must prove competence in Mathematics (refer to latest year-end report as indicator hereof – at least 40%).
All prospective students must adhere to the minimum entry requirements as prescribed by the national policy (please refer to NCV brochure for detailed information).
EMC places a high regard on prospective students with a Gr 10/12 qualifications based on the level of maturity projected by these students.
Electrical Engineering students: should not be colour blind.
Engineering students: a technical hobby will be an added advantage for prospective students.
Finance, Economics and Accounting: Gr 11 / 12 pass in Economics and Management Science will be an added advantage.
Finance, Economics & Accounting: students should have a basic knowledge and ability to control own finances.
Marketing and Tourism: students should have vibrant personalities.
Office Administration, Marketing and Tourism: students should have peoples skills.
Marketing: students should be innovative and creative.
Students who reflect the following behavioural patterns should be recruited as a profile of the ideal EMC student: Have a history of abstinence in terms of substance abuse (possession, use & trafficking). Commit them to comply with all provisions of the Colleges Code of Conduct. Respect the health and safety of others. Respect the rights of fellow students when participating in college organisations. Maintain relationships amongst students which are free from fear, threat, or act of hazing. Honesty as an integral part of his/her personality. Good behaviour. Adherence to norms and standards of previous institution/school. Maturity. Acceptance of all race groups (students & staff). Positive attitude towards college activities and ethics. Careful handling of equipment and infrastructure. Punctuality. Excellent record of attendance. Ability to work in groups. Energetic.
Place higher emphasis on recruitment of students who are in the close surrounding feeding areas of the respective campuses. EMC realises the direct link between a healthy socio economic neighbourhood and academic progression of students.
The programmes were developed for school leavers of 15 – 35 years of age. Both male and female students are welcome. All race groups are welcome to enrol. In Uitenhage the class groups should reflect the population demographics (60% african, 22% coloured, 17% white, 1 Indian/Asian) Students with disabilities should be treated with the utmost discretion.
Students with an interest in extra-curricular activities should be encouraged to apply. Extra-curricular activities should not interfere with academic performance. The participation in extra-curricular activities will be used as a measuring tool in terms of EMCs delivery of the Student Support Services (SSS) framework.
The ideal theory class groups should not exceed 30 students (The maximum for Charles Goodyear should not exceed 25 students) The ideal engineering practical (workshop) classes should not exceed 15 students (depending on subject offered). The prescription for workshops at Charles Goodyear campus where rotating machinery are used is a ratio of 1:12. All computer classes at the various campuses can accommodate 30 students. Charles Goodyear Campus computer lab can only accommodate 25 students.
