Students must be well informed about their career choices, before they register for their studies. Therefore, Eastcape Midlands College set up a career enlightenment/information test for more than 100 prospective Port Elizabeth students.
“Through this test, we determine the prospective students’ strong and weak points in Mathematics and Afrikaans,” says Kevin Smith, a co-ordinator.
“After the tests have been revised, we see who qualify. Then we will contact the learners and have individual sessions with them to give them proper career enlightenment, to ensure that they fall into the correct course.”
According to Smith, the plan is to establish a career enlightenment centre to EMC. This first cover of tests is just the beginning.
“We understand the importance thereof to give the youth good opportunities,” says Smith. “Therefore this process must be done properly.”
For Bopelo Ngubelanga (24), one of the potential students of KwaZakhele, this is her biggest opportunity so far. She says, “I am very grateful for this opportunity. If all goes well, I will be the first in my family to go study further.”
“The test was relatively easy, and I know I did well. I really want to do business studies, but hopefully the career enlightenment will make things clearer for me.”
